From above, you see more - how satellites help in the fight against floods.
On Friday, in response to the deteriorating situation, the Crisis Information Centre of CBK PAN launched a special satellite monitoring system for the flood situation. This system detects areas where water has overflowed from riverbanks and where floodplains are forming. The operations are conducted in collaboration with the Polish-Finnish company ICEYE, which operates the largest civilian radar satellite constellation observing Earth. Data and reports are delivered every few hours to the State Fire Service, crisis management centers, and the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management - National Research Institute.

Ice jam on the Vistula River
As a result of persistent frosts, ice phenomena including ice jams have formed on many rivers and water reservoirs, which can cause flooding. Currently, a difficult situation prevails in the section of the Vistula River from the mouth of the Narew River to Płock, where a flood alert has been announced. Ice has also accumulated on Lake Włocławskie and may potentially threaten the dam in Włocławek.

Sewage in Vistula on Sentinel-2 images
On 27th and 28th August 2019 two collectors discharging sewage from left-bank Warsaw to the Czajka sawage treatment plant failed. Therefore, the discharge of wastewater from this part of the city straight to the Vistula River was started using the emergency sewage outlet at Farysa Street, north of the Maria Skłodowska-Curie Bridge. The discharge of sewage into the river averages 3 m³ per second. The preliminary, direct cause of the failure is said to be delamination of the collectors.

Water extent maps in south-eastern Poland (new maps added on 27 May)
Intensive rainfall and storms in the period of 20-22 May 2019 contributed to water level rising and local flooding in southern Poland. Today, the Government Centre for Security (RCB) issued 2nd and 3rd degree flood warning in Śląsk, Małopolska and Podkarpackie provinces. Based on the current Sentinel-1 radar and Sentinel-2 optical images provided by the Copernicus program, the Crisis Information Centre CBK PAN developed water extent maps for the most affected areas. Some of the maps were prepared as a result of activation launched by the Podkarpackie Voivode as part of a permanent agreement between the Podkarpackie Provincial Office and CBK PAN.
